Let’s face it, EQ can be a huge source of frustration. How many times have you spent a ton of time EQ-ing a track, only to walk away, scratching your head, wondering why it doesn’t sound better?
I’ve been there, and you should know that you don’t have to stay there.
The problem? You don’t really know where to start. That’s where Understanding EQ can help.
Do any of these describe you?
If so, Understanding EQ is just for you.
You’re spinning your wheels when it comes to EQ. You need a starting point. With Understanding EQ, I walk you through the EQ process. I talk in-depth about what EQ is, how it works, and how to approach it in a way that gets great results every time.
Well I just finished the 4th Video ‘Real World Examples’. Great information Joe! You taught me a few things about EQ and you’ve also made me more aware of the importance & impact of not only using EQ, but knowing how to use it. Your ear training tips were very valuable and have provided me with greater knowledge. Lots of good stuff here Joe; you’ve opened a path of endless possibilities in the digital & analog world of home studio & live monitoring & tracking.
My name is Joe Gilder. I’m a recording engineer in Nashville, TN. I run the popular home recording website HomeStudioCorner.com, where I help thousands of home studio owners like yourself get better recordings.
Understanding EQ consists of 4 videos (over 2 hours of content). These are high-definition full-screen videos, where I walk through everything as if you were sitting with me in my studio.
When you first pull up an EQ on the screen, it can be a little daunting. There are a surprising number of knobs and settings. In this video I walk you through all the components of a typical EQ, and teach you how each of them work.
Do you ever use the Q knob? I’ll teach you how it works and how it can be an extremely helpful tool. Got questions about HPF? LPF? Shelf vs. Bell? I’ll address all of these and much more in this first video.
The BEST thing you can do to help you master EQ is to spend time learning what the various frequency ranges sound like. You’d be surprised how much you don’t know about frequencies.
In this video I walk you step-by-step through how to transform your DAW into a frequency analyzing system. I’ll show you how to isolate frequencies in a mix and listen to ONLY the frequencies you want to hear.
This alone will be one of the most helpful exercises you’ll ever do as an audio engineer. Over time, you’ll be able to hone in on specific frequencies faster than you ever thought you could.
Once you’ve mastered ear training, we take the next step. I’ll share with you various approaches to using EQ, and I’ll tell you about the approach that I think is the absolute best.
If you master the things you learn in this video, you’ll be able to walk up to any session and start EQ-ing with confidence, regardless of what instruments you’re mixing.
In the final video, we take everything we learned in the first three videos and apply it to several real-world examples. We’ll walk through several different songs, and I’ll show you how to quickly and easily EQ them.
“So clearly explained”
Just purchased your Understanding EQ series of videos. I have to say, I am the king of muddy mixes, not to be confused with Muddy Waters. I have watched so far the first 3, and have gained a ton of knowledge. I have to say your approach to eq is so clearly explained, that an old guy like me can even understand it.
Just wanted to say thank you for such a great site and great products.
Thanks again for the EQ videos. They have been enlightening. I’ve been digesting them and taking in your approach all week.
One of the big ‘Ah ha!’ moments for me was when you talk about rolling off unnecessary frequencies for each instrument. I also really enjoyed the ear training section (all these years of listening to music and NOT hearing things!!) – very helpful stuff.
Also, I just bought Understanding Compression. I saw how you made it clear when the price was going up (and couldn’t help thinking it was to clarify / avoid people coming in late, like me, eeeehhh). But I’m on the case this time, and have already ordered and started watching. Very cool editing by the way.
Just wanted to say ‘Thanks!’ again.
As with all of my tutorials, if you don’t get an immense amount of value out of the videos, let me know, and I’ll happily and quickly refund your money. Just shoot me an email within 30 days of your purchase.
Enjoy the videos, and have fun making better recordings!
P.S. These videos are downloadable, and they’re yours to keep…forever.
